The Monterey Peninsula in California includes a picturesque stretch of coastline between Marina and Carmel-by-the-Sea, including Monterey and Pacific Grove. The natural setting and abundance of outdoor activities make it one of the most dog-friendly destinations. As a local resident with a friendly black Labrador by my side, here are a few ideas of things to do with your dog that will allow you both to experience all the area has to offer. As an added bonus, most of them are free!

Carmel Beach
One of two beaches on this list, Carmel Beach is a mile-long stretch of white sand bookended by the famous Pebble Beach Golf Links on the north end and the home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright to the south. Located at the end of Ocean Avenue in Camel-by-the-Sea, it is a must-see destination for visitors and is beloved by locals alike. Dogs are allowed off-leash as long as they are under voice control by their owners. This provides the perfect opportunity for your furry friend to burn off steam, get out the zoomies, and meet other dogs. You are guaranteed to have a happy (maybe a little sandy) pup after a visit to this iconic destination.
Asilomar Beach
While dogs do not have quite the same off-leash privileges at Asilomar Beach, it still ranks as a top dog-friendly destination. Asilomar Beach is not as protected from the elements as Carmel, so visitors are treated to a more rugged coastline as part of the spectacular views. The Asilomar Coastal Trail, accessed off various points on Sunset Drive, is a popular walking trail and perfect for a sunrise or sunset stroll. As you get closer to the south end of the trail around sunset you may be serenaded by the famous Spanish Bay Inn bagpipers.
The Hay
The Monterey Peninsula is known for its world-class golf courses, chief among them Pebble Beach Golf Links and Cypress Point. At The Hay, located on the Pebble Beach Resort property, your dog can join you on a round of golf! This 9-hole, par 3 golf course was renovated in 2021 with the help of Tiger Woods and, on clear days, offers some of the best views of Carmel on the property. The course even includes a scaled-down version of the signature 7th hole from the Pebble Beach Golf Links. Dog owners must keep their pups on a leash and under their control at all times. I have seen many dogs enjoy walking the course with their best friend and after enjoying a drink or a meal on the patio of Hay’s Place (also, dog-friendly!).
Whale Watching
Yes, that’s right. Your dog can join you on a whale-watching experience out on Monterey Bay. Monterey Bay Whale Watch will take you and your pup out to sea to catch glimpses of sea lions, otters, dolphins, blue whales, orcas, and many other species while the salty air runs through your hair and fur, respectively. It is recommended that you book a morning boat to maximize the four-hour excursion. A marine biologist is on every tour to provide information on various marine life and insights into their behavior. The bay can be unpredictable and it is not uncommon to encounter some rough waters, so it is important that you and your dog take the proper precautions before embarking on this unique experience.
Garland Ranch Regional Park
Garland Ranch Regional Park is off the coast and is located along the Carmel River. It is one of the premier locations for a day hike in the area that also allows dogs on leashes. The trails start at 200 feet in elevation and rise up to 2,000 with a variety of landscapes and vista points along the way. It is strongly recommended that you bring water for both you and your pup. With numerous trails, it never feels crowded and is guaranteed to be a memorable sniff-ari for your dog.
Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail
The Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail is an 18-mile converted rail-to-trail path that extends from Castroville to Pacific Grove. It was formerly the Southern Pacific Railroad line used to transport goods from Monterey to the rest of Northern California. The most popular section of the trial is an approximately 2.5-mile stretch from the Old Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey to Lovers Point in Pacific Grove. Along this stretch, you and your dog will walk through Cannery Row, past the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, and be treated to more views of the iconic coastline.
Murals in Sand City
Sand City is an industrial artist enclave situated 10 miles north of Monterey. Since 2020, the exterior of the warehouses in what is known as the “west end” has come alive with creations from international street artists. The goal of the project is to increase accessibility and a shared community experience around art. There are now over 50 pieces throughout the neighborhood which makes it a unique stop on a visit to the Monterey Peninsula and a prime place to take your four-legged friend. This Google Map provides the list and location of all the murals and a few ideas of where to stop along the way! I also recommend stopping by Alma Del Mar, an eco-friendly surf and gift shop that supports the Wahine Project which increases access and inclusivity in ocean sports.
